Individual Reflections - Selvaraj Siddharth

SST-NTU FLAGSHIP CAMP JUNE

Pre-Camp Reflections
What interests you about this project?

The experience of having to carry out and be in control processes that are done in industries interested me.Along with that, the know-how of using essential analytical equipment to differentiate the component liquids and the product composition attracted me.

What do you want to learn by doing this project?
I want to know how exactly the large-scale industrial distillation plants work and their specifics.I also want to know more about how the different liquids are being differentiated.
What questions do you have about this project?
- Is the distillation column capable of other methods of separating liquids?
- How is distillation consider as biomedical engineering?
- How does each property of the liquid affect the process?
- How are the large-scale distillation plant built?
- Are there formulae for all the different properties of the liquids?
- How can the distillation process be connected and constructed to a graph?
- What other concepts that we were taught in school that can be used in the distillation process?
- How will you be able to identify if a solution is suitable for distillation.
- What is reflux?
What do you personally want to have achieved by the end of this project?
Personally, I would want to make good use of this opportunity to have a flagship programme in NTU by able to use the various concepts learned in future.I want to be able to understand and able to conduct the necessary experiments on my own. Thus, this would be platform for me to gain the required knowledge and also to  start working with industrial scale equipment.

Day 1 Plenary Sessions (Reflections)
Earthquakes,Tsunamis By Prof. Kerry Sieh

The key learning points that i had learnt from this plenary session was a more detailed look at on the oceanic and continental crusts convergence. We learnt about the real-life instances where these convergences caused earthquakes which caused tsunamis, changing the geography of the area. This also taught me that the history of tsunamis in a coastal region can be found by checking the sedimentary layers of the most affected places. And also checking the age of the corals which would have died off due to the sudden decrease in height of the low tides.
How many and what are the other ways to find the history of tsunamis/earthquakes hitting an area?
In what other ways can these earthquakes be detected?
“IT for Animation” by Prof. Seah Hock Soon
There are many types of animation consisting of stop animation, 2d and 3d animations. Stop Animation is the methods of taking pictures of each shot for each frame. There are many aspects to 2d and 3d animations.geometric modeling and linear algebra is used in both of these animations.

What are the some of the formulae used?
“Innovative breakthroughs in Nano-Science and Nano-Technology” by Prof. Ma Jan

Nanotechnology is about everything technological being reduced to something microscopic. Nano-Technology, Biological Technology, Electronic technology and Defense Technology are areas for research in this broad topic. Quantum Dots are very tiny devices capable of storing a lot more information than most libraries. Materials that are nano-sized will result in differing wavelengths of light reflected back. For example, Gold appears red in colour when nano-sized.This is the possible future of many of our electrical appliances. Nano-sized mesh can be inserted into the blood vessel to prevent blockages causing heart attacks and high blood pressure.
How are the Nano-Tech affecting the world currently? (Other ways than listed)
How can the Nano-Tech be used for world peace?

Day 3 My Personal Reflection / Accomplishments(Reflections)
1. Discuss how the project has deepened your understanding and broadened your awareness of the selected discipline.
Before starting on the project, I had learnt about simple distillation and paper chromatography in school. The simple distillation were based on the same basic concepts of what was given in NTU. The paper chromatography was for liquids while in the project, we were using a machine to get the gas chromatography of the samples. This gave me a more in-depth experiential perspective of the concepts i had learnt.

2. What do you now understand about this discipline that you are unaware of at the beginning?
I was not aware what was reflux that was mentioned in the project manual. Now I understand that flux refers to the portion of the overhead product receiver that is returned to the upper part of the column. As the hottest tray is at the bottom and the coolest tray is at the top, the reflux allows the hot vapor to condense and cause this mixture to go through the differing boiling points. Thus, purifying the mixture more.I also learnt about the different names of the distillation column apparatus. We were also told of finding different conditions set to possibly blowing the column up! But the learning motive was to know how not to blow up the column.
3. Describe how you can connect what you have learned from doing this project to what you are learning in school?
I now understand how the basic concepts i have learnt about simple distillation, how the differing boiling points affects the process of distillation can be used to achieve a better distillation process.By placing multiple trays vertically, the substance can be boiled at varying temperatures to get different distillates. And repeating the process causes it to be more pure.

    4. Describe how you can apply what you have learned from doing this project.
Doing this project gives me more exposure to what can be learnt and be done as part of working in the chemical-engineering field. I can apply this knowledge when I am working the same field of work.
5. At the end of the project, some new questions I have included ...
Are there ‘extra’ apparatus that can be placed inside of the distillation column for usage in oil refineries?
If so, what are they and how are they being used?
Can easily-explosive liquids that are mixed thoroughly be separated by using the minute differences in their boiling points?

    6.My Aspirations...
I hope to be able to make good use of what I have learnt and do much better. I hope i wold be able to have more exposures of this type to educate myself.
